Many of us have no formal education when it comes to our finances. We may have learned to write a check, or open a bank account, but don’t we need actual financial advice based on our situation? The modern system assumes people will go out and learn on their own, but if those around us have never taught us, then we’ll never know what we should do.
Financial coach, best-selling author, and TEDx speaker, Rahkim Sabree breaks down the reality of finance in the black community and tells his story and motivation for making it his mission to educate other black professionals about finance.
There is an element of cultural sensitivity that financial educators need to have when they’re talking about these topics, because you’re dealing with generations of trauma, psychological trauma that is not going to be undone by a financial literacy course. I talk a lot about financial empowerment, [and] there are a lot of people out there who know what they should be doing, but they’re not doing it because they don’t feel empowered to do it. They don’t feel empowered to go out and make this difference.
