Show Notes

Episode Summary:
In this unfiltered episode of the 1% Man Podcast, I’m walking you through the hardest but most necessary part of your money journey: owning your financial truth.

This is the “red pill” moment where you wake up and face your finances—without blame, without shame, and without spiritual excuses. I’m not here to attack your faith, but to challenge the cultural habits and broken financial systems (yes, even in our churches and families) that are keeping you broke.

I share:

Real Talk Highlights:

Action Steps:

  1. Open your bank account – Track every dollar that comes in and goes out for a full month

  2. Use the “Must Have / Not Must Have” method – Write everything down and separate needs vs wants

  3. Build your budget – Compare monthly income to real expenses and see the truth clearly

  4. Stop glorifying struggle – You don’t need to look broke to be relatable

  5. Start building quiet wealth – Assets over aesthetics. Ownership over optics.

Listener Note:

People are going to call you obsessed. They’ll call you greedy. They’ll even call you the devil for questioning old systems. Let them. Your job is to own your truth and fix the legacy.

[00:00:02] What is up? Welcome back. And I'm so glad that you're sticking here with us. All right, let's go straight into episode three. And this is probably one of the hardest things to do, because this is where you're gonna be called the devil. This is where your moral conflicts. This is where you are going to start to break other people's identity and probably even waking up, wake them up, right? [00:00:23] So what you think about the Matrix here for a minute? Do you remember when Morpheus and Morpheus first met Neo? And he was like, you take the red pill or the blue pill, right? And he was like, if you take the red pill, you know, you'll see how far you go down. Wonderland. You take the blue pill, you go back to sleep, you wake up, you stay in the Matrix and everything stays the same, right? This is a situation where me as Morpheus is offering you a red or a blue pill. I want to tell you right now, if you take the red pill, I am going to show you how far the rabbit. You know, if you take this green pillow, because I'm talking about money here, I'm going to show you how far the rabbit hole goes. I'm going to show you that this is something that is systemic. This is something that is in our churches. This is something that's in your family. This is something that's in your own family right now. And it's happening. And I want to help you get out, or I want you to take this ex pill X out of this. Press pause. Don't listen to what I have to say, because once you know this, you cannot know. And you're going to keep hearing this, and you probably have already been hearing this your whole life, but owning your financial truth. [00:01:27] In the first episode, we talked about the overview. Second episode, I told you, hey, go subscribe to all these money podcasts and email lists and coaches and buy these books and start reading about money. I want you to start talking about money now. I want you to start really identifying where you are financially. [00:01:45] And here's a quick story to explain what happened to me. And this is when it really clicked for me. [00:01:50] I was in church and we were praying about money. We were praying about getting better jobs, people becoming millionaires and stuff like that, right? And it hit me that God is so wealthy. God has all this money, yet we're broke. [00:02:07] That didn't sit well in my spirit. And I started to ask questions of how is it that every week we're coming in here, we're praying for better jobs? We're praying for more, more financial relief, and yet people are struggling to pay their bills. People are suffering financially, right? And most of the problems that stem from smaller churches, right? Less than 1% of churches are mega churches. [00:02:30] Excuse me, 1% of churches in America are mega churches. Most of the churches only have about 60 to less than 60 to 70 members, right? So most churches are small. Pastors in the first family can't really take an income. [00:02:43] And I say all this to say that most people that go to church are suffering, they're hurting, right? They're not in the best financial position. But if you serve a God that's supposed to know all your needs and provide, but yet you're broke, does that mean God is broke? [00:02:57] Does that mean there's a broken system here? Does that mean your faith is broken? [00:03:02] I was called the devil because I started to question, because I started to say, you know what? I think money is way more important than what we've been putting it. That I was like, you know, I'm gonna stop praying for money. I'm gonna start taking more action. [00:03:14] And I'm telling you now, when you start talking like this, right, people like to go masturbate. And when I said. When I say this, I don't say this in terms of physically, but they like to spiritually masturbate at church and pray and do all the hoopla. But when it comes time to action and changing their habits, they don't want to follow me very closely here. [00:03:39] People would rather sit down there and complain about how their life and how they don't have money. But once you give them the plan, they don't want to do it because it causes them to have to realize, hey, I have to change, right? And what I'm telling you here right now, you're going to see that you're going to have to change a lot of things, and a lot of people are going to have to have to wake up, right, to the reality that their financial struggle is not because of God, but it's because of themselves. [00:04:03] And the reason why you're in the financial position that you're in is because it may be because of your family, but, hey, it's your responsibility now. [00:04:11] So what do I want you to do? What is the action step here? I want you to open your bank account. I want you to start listing out all the things that you pay for every time money went out of your account. [00:04:23] Take a piece of paper, fold it in half. [00:04:27] One you're going to write must, and the other one, your must have right and not must have, right? And you're just going to write down all the must that you must pay. Like, you know, you have to pay your rent, you have to pay your car payment, right? But if you went out to eat, so you got Uber eats, write that down on the not not must have right? And you're going to keep just tracking for the whole month and see, and see how much money went in, how much money came out. [00:04:55] This is super powerful because now you are going to see financially for yourself, where do you place your money? This is a wake up call to yourself to see. Okay, maybe my financial picture, my financial situation isn't because the outside world is influencing me. The white man is doing something to me. Maybe it's because of my own actions. [00:05:17] Second thing you're going to do, right, you're going to create a budget from that must and not must, right? And say all the must that you must pay. Find out what is that number that you have to hit every single month. [00:05:29] When you figure that out, then write another line that says income. What do you bring in every month? [00:05:35] You're going to see, okay, you know what, you might be overspending, but because you're not tracking it, you have no awareness of what's going on. You are blaming outside circumstances. You're living and saying, oh man, I got all these bills and all this. And you might be causing it to yourself. [00:05:51] This is probably one of the hardest things for people to do. I'm telling you, it's one of the hardest things for people to do. Because churches actually before that, let me say, culturally, all right, it's easier to look rich than being rich looking rich. For me, when I was growing up, I thought 50 Cent was the epitome of what a successful rich black man was. Because when I was growing up, 50 Cent just came out within the club. G unit was everywhere. G juj Juju G unit, right? [00:06:18] Being that was more was what was what was hot for us, right? Not the Huxtables, right? The Cosby's, as you see, had. Had the hat. Was, was like at the time, Bill Cosby and the Hucksables was like, that was like the image of what a successful black family, right? I believe Bill was a. Bill Cosby was a doctor and Claire Huxbow was a lawyer, but just that. And then they had a super strong family. They communicated. They handle problems with families. But a lot of times in our community performance, wealth, right. Looking the part, right? [00:06:57] Back in the day, if you had the G unit, if you had fubu. If you had the shoes, if you had the status symbol on you, that's performance wealth on you. [00:07:10] And instead, instead of talking about, hey, stocks, bonds, owning houses, real estate, stuff like that, that ownership piece, right? Those are things that aren't tangible. We can't really see that, right? That doesn't, there's no placement, right? I can't wear, oh, I could wear a shirt that says I own a house. But you can't wear your house on you, right? But you could have a Gucci shirt, you could have a Gucci belt, right? Balenciaga's on your feet. And now you look wealthy, but you're not wealthy. You have no money in your account. I remember specifically talking to somebody, right? They had I think almost maybe $5,000 worth of clothes on them, Gucci belt, Balenciaga shoes, which was 2 or 3,000, whatever it was, right? This girl was a contractor overseas. She was making, I think she maybe made 200,000 overseas tax free or something like that, right? Came back, spent all her money. But I mean she was decked out head to toe, looked great, right? New hair, everything. Lashes, jewelry, all that. [00:08:13] Me, myself wearing my Walmart clothes, right? But I had 25,000 saved up. [00:08:19] She did not. [00:08:21] She made way more than me. [00:08:23] But when you look at ourselves, right, Financially, two different positions, right? [00:08:29] So what am I really telling you right here is that I want you to start tracking what you're spending your money on and I want you to let go of trying to look impressive. I want to give you the permission to say, hey, your real wealth is going to be in your bank and in what you own, not what you look like. And not impressing anyone, right? You may be doing it for yourself, that's great. But until you get into a better financial picture, I want you to understand that being seen as rich by other people is not going to help you men. Please listen to me. You listen to me, please. Being seen as rich isn't going to help you, but being rich is going to help you. Having the money in your account and being comfortable with having that money in your account is going to help you. [00:09:16] And I want you to let go of glorifying poverty. [00:09:21] Everybody has this rags to riches stories. America is built on rags to riches, right? But you do not have to have, you don't have to have a rags to richer story to be able to share with others. I come from a two parent household and I'm proud of it, right? But everybody and nowadays wants to say, well, I was raised by a single Mom, I was raised. We were poor. All this sounds great. Thank you. [00:09:47] Guilt programming isn't gonna work here, right? [00:09:51] God isn't in the sky trying to punish you for being poor. Your own actions are doing that to yourself. Right? I want you to stop praying for money. I want you to stop demanding it. I want you to start looking at your own actions and habits. [00:10:03] Because faith without the financial action is fantasy. And that's what a lot of us are doing, going to church. We have this fantasy world that, oh, my God, everything is happening to me. All this chaos around me is going on because, oh, my God, I'm just this. No, you're not perfect. I was not perfect either. [00:10:19] So I want you to let go of all that. So your action step today. Open your bank account. I know this is going to be hard. Open your bank account. Write down all the things you're spending your money on, and then break that list down to all the things that you have to spend your money on every month. All things you don't have to spend your money on every month. You are going to be shocked. I know it. You're going to be shocked. Okay? I said a lot. I threw a lot at you. But I know you can handle it, all right? I believe in you, black man. I believe in you. And if you are not black man, and you're still listening to this, I believe in you, too. Get to work. Open that bank account. Do this. This is super powerful. [00:10:53] And word to the wise. Warning, please. Warning. Warning. Warning. Warning. People are going to call you everything but a child of God when you start doing this. They're going to call you a devil. They're going to say you're too focused on money. They're going to tell you that money's not that important, that people are more important and all that. Understand this, and I'm going to tell you. I'm going to keep saying this over and over again. You can have money and you can have friends. You can have money and you can have God. You can have money and you can have nice things. But you have to make sure that you have money put away and are secure financially, right? Not in debt. And you can have those nice things. All right? Do you see what I'm saying right here? [00:11:34] You can have money. You can have all the nice things. You can have all these things. It's not money, but, no, God, it's not. You can have money, but no healthy relationship. It's not. I'm telling you, I'm married. I. I have four kids. I have a super healthy relationship with my wife. And we have money and we take care of debt. We just put away $3,000 into our savings. 3,000. That's somebody's salary every two weeks. Salary we put away. All right, so you can have both. My wife has zero debt. [00:12:03] Zero debt. [00:12:05] Because we planned and we made it happen. So with that being said, I know you can do this and overcome this, right? I'm not telling you let go of your religion. I'm not telling you to let go of what you believe. But what I'm. Excuse me. I'm telling you let's go what you believe, but I'm not telling you have to let go of God or that. But what I'm saying is you don't have to subscribe to that God is punishing you, that the world or the white man is letting you down. No, I want you to look at your actions, look at your habits and see where you are. [00:12:31] Okay? [00:12:32] Get to it. And I can't wait to see you next time because we're going to be talking about how to increase yourself financially, what I did and how this is going to help you tremendously. Okay? Until then, get to work. [00:12:43] Peace.
